About the power systems

Rear Deck over Engine Compartment
  • Bicycle space
  • Decking covered with rubber grid matting tied together (to protect against slipping and protect paintwork)
  • Cruising controls
  • 20A 12V AeroGen 4 Wind Turbine
  • Electrical weatherproof hook up (in & out) 16A connections
  • Functional burglar alarm bell box
  • Post box to receive mail//messages (from other boaters) to avoid excess draft or wet mail
  • Hire of a Post Office Box for Royal Mail deliveries (collect at delivery office)
  •
    Roof over main cabin
  • 1kW Array of Solar PV modules (including sides) - 24V strings (44V peak) secured on M10 all-thread
  • Storage for firewood sheltered under PV array
  • Trailer for transporting bulky items (Elsan, fuel - including firewood) by bicycle particularly to/from remote locations
  • Gang plank
  • Barge pole aka 20foot length of 2" by 2" found floating in canal
  •
    Front Deck
  • Electrical weatherproof outlet connections
  • window boxes & hanging basket garden
  • pond pump irrigation system from canal when needed
  • Decking covered with rubber grid matting tied together (to protect against slipping and protect paintwork)
  • Barbecue on metal shelf in deck area - avoids heat affecting boat paintwork
  • 600 litre fresh cold water tank in bow (front) section - painted (water tank paint) to protect steel
  •

Below Deck & Inside Main Cabin

    Under Rear Deck
  • 200 litre diesel tank, often near empty these days
  • Weed hatch (top above waterline) allows access to the propeller to allow removal of water weeds, plastic bags, & most other debris that may be caught on it from in the canal
  • jerry cans for carrying diesel to the boat are also stored here, the fuel should be secured & kept separate if it is to be used for domestic (non-propulsion) purposes
  • Additional fuel - water removal filter (glass type) for easy maintenance
  • 40 Horse Power (x0.75kW=30kW), 2.0 litre, Shire Barrus Marinised (water cooled) Yanmar 4 cylinder diesel engine
  • Shire Barrus Water Cooling circuit feeds calorifier (hot water tank) with brine (water + antifreeze) once at running temperature, only then feeding skin tank (heat dump into canal) when hotter still
  • 90Amp Starter alternator for starter battery & 110Amp leisure alternator (on multi ribbed pulley to allow reliable optimal power delivery at low engine speed)
  • Flooded lead acid batteries (normally the cheapest electricity store at this scale) are secured here to reduce the risks in the main cabin
  • A metal bulkhead (sealed wall except raised cable/pipe via) separates the engine compartment from the cabin to reduce the risk from engine fire or flood from operating a partly uncovered weed hatch
  • An automatic float operated bilge pump removes excess water accumulated around the engine - but not oil from under the engine itself
